Gentle, precise manual therapy for pain relief and improved function.

About Fascial Counterstrain

Fascial Counterstrain (FCS) is a gentle, hands-on technique that helps your body release tension and inflammation trapped deep within its connective tissue system — the fascia.
Your fascia is a living web that surrounds every muscle, nerve, blood vessel, and organ. When part of this web tightens or becomes irritated, it can pull on distant areas, restrict motion, and keep the nervous system in a protective, overactive state.

Through light touch and precise positioning, FCS helps the body “switch off” those protective reflexes, restoring natural motion, healthy circulation, and calm to the entire system. The result is less pain, more freedom, and a sense of balance that feels effortless.

Instead of applying force or stretching tissue hard, the therapist gently moves the body into a position of comfort, effectively “shortening” the strained area until it relaxes. When that tissue relaxes, one of two things happens: the local nerve messages calm, and the tight fascia stops gripping surrounding structures. As a result, pain signals drop and movement improves.

Every session begins with the practitioner feeling for tender spots (points of protective spasm) across muscles, nerves, organs or joints. Once located, the patient is placed into a relaxed posture for 60-90 seconds. When the body shifts out of the reflex-driven tight state, tissue softens, blood and lymph flow improve, and the system resets.

Because the body’s fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles, organs and nerves) is highly responsive, even small positional changes can trigger meaningful relief. Many traditional techniques focus on muscles or joints only; FCS goes deeper by linking structural tension, nervous system reflexes and fluid dynamics.

By calming the protective reflexes and improving micro-circulation, longstanding tightness can finally soften. The treatment is so gentle it’s especially helpful when stronger manual methods have failed or been too aggressive.

FCS is used for a wide range of presentations—including but not limited to:

  • Neck, shoulder and back pain (especially persistent or recurrent)

  • Headaches, TMJ dysfunction and jaw tension

  • Nerve-related discomfort such as sciatica or entrapment syndromes

  • Postural and breathing restrictions tied to fascial tension

  • Swelling, inflammation or lymph/venous congestion linked to fascial restriction

  • Sports injuries and repetitive-strain issues which do not resolve easily

Because the technique is so gentle it also works for children, older adults, and those recovering from surgery or with heightened sensitivity.

You will not experience forceful cracking, deep scraping, or aggressive manipulation during a session. The hallmark of FCS is comfort. The therapist listens to your body, asks for feedback, and proceeds only when the position is comfortable.
Soreness afterwards is minimal. Many clients leave feeling lighter, more relaxed and with improved mobility. Because of the gentleness, FCS is considered relatively low-risk for most clients when performed by a trained practitioner.

The original Strain-Counterstrain method was developed by osteopath Dr. Lawrence Jones in the mid-20th century. Over time, physical therapist Brian Tuckey expanded that model into what is now known as Fascial Counterstrain (FCS)—a system that maps 800+ techniques and addresses muscles, organs, nerves, vessels and ligaments alike.

Today it is a refined approach taught in specialist courses and used by advanced practitioners around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people describe it as gentle, relaxing, and sometimes surprisingly powerful. You’ll be fully clothed while the therapist uses light touch to find tender or restricted points. Then, they’ll place your body into comfortable positions for short periods — usually 60–90 seconds — until the restriction releases. There’s no forceful manipulation or pain involved.

The number of sessions depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and how your body responds. Some people notice immediate relief after one session, while chronic or complex cases often require several treatments. Many clients choose occasional follow-ups to maintain mobility and prevent flare-ups.

Yes. FCS is particularly effective for chronic or recurring pain that hasn’t improved with other methods. By targeting the root cause — protective reflexes in the fascia and nervous system — it helps the body return to a relaxed, balanced state rather than just masking symptoms.

FCS is safe for nearly all ages and conditions, including children, elderly clients, and people recovering from injuries or surgery. Because it’s gentle and does not use force, it’s often preferred when deep pressure or manipulation would be too aggressive. Your therapist will always tailor treatment to your comfort and medical background.

Many clients feel lighter, calmer, or more mobile right after treatment. Occasionally, you might feel mild soreness or fatigue for a day or two — this is normal and part of the body’s readjustment process. Staying hydrated and moving gently afterward helps your system adapt to the new, relaxed state.

Yes, absolutely. In fact, at Body Motion Therapy, FCS is often paired with Remedial Massage and Dry Needling for a complete and balanced approach. This combination helps release deeper layers of restriction, improve blood flow, and maintain lasting results.
